What is a calf feeder

A calf feeder is a device that automatically mixes milk or milk powder and feeds it to calves at the correct temperature. Instead of filling buckets and feeding manually several times a day, the machine controls the quantity, temperature and number of feeding sessions per calf. Each calf wears an ear tag or collar with a transponder, so the machine knows which animal is drinking and how much milk that animal has already received that day.

The machine is primarily used on farms with group housing of calves, where multiple animals receive milk via one or more drinking stations. On smaller farms with individual housing, manual feeding or a simpler calf feeding bucket system is often still common.

Advantages of automatic feeding

The main advantage is labour saving. Instead of carrying buckets around three or four times a day, the farmer only needs to fill and check the machine. In addition, a calf feeder offers a number of practical benefits:

  • Calves can drink more frequently and in smaller portions, which more closely matches their natural drinking behaviour.
  • The milk is prepared at the same temperature and concentration every time, which reduces digestive problems.
  • Drinking speed and quantity per calf are recorded, meaning abnormal behaviour is noticed early.
  • There is less risk of errors when mixing milk powder, as this is done mechanically and consistently.

A disadvantage is the investment and maintenance. The machine consists of multiple moving parts such as valves, membranes and hoses, which require regular attention to keep operating hygienically and without breakdowns.

How a calf feeder works

Most machines operate on the same principle. Milk powder and warm water are mixed in the correct ratio to produce a homogeneous milk at the set temperature, usually around 40 degrees Celsius. The milk is then pumped via a pipe to the drinking station, where the calf drinks through a teat.

The quantity of milk per feeding session and the total number of litres per day are set per calf, often increasing according to a build-up schedule in the first weeks and decreasing towards weaning. A solenoid valve or milk valve controls the flow to the drinking station and closes once the set quantity has been reached. This valve is one of the parts that wears most, as it opens and closes dozens of times a day.

Cleaning and hygiene

Most machines periodically flush themselves with water, and some systems also clean with a cleaning agent at fixed times. This prevents milk residues from building up in the pipes and drinking station, which would otherwise provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Despite automatic cleaning, it remains necessary to regularly check and clean the teat, drinking bowl and hoses manually.

Maintenance and common faults

A calf feeder runs all year round, often 24 hours a day. Wear of rubber parts is therefore inevitable. The most common faults and maintenance points are:

  • Leaking or sticking milk valve. If the valve no longer closes properly, milk drips through or dosing becomes inaccurate. Replacing the membrane or the complete milk valve revision kit is often sufficient to resolve this.
  • Worn membrane. The membrane of the milk valve is a wear part that needs to be replaced regularly, especially with intensive use involving multiple calves per station.
  • Damaged retaining ring. The retaining ring of the membrane keeps the membrane in place. If this is loose or deformed, the valve will leak.
  • Worn O-ring. A leaking valve housing can often be traced back to a worn O-ring in the milk valve. This rubber ring is inexpensive and quick to replace.
  • Damaged base plate. The base plate of the solenoid valve forms the connection between the valve and the pipe. Cracks or leakage here require immediate replacement, as otherwise dosing becomes unreliable.

It is advisable to visually inspect the hoses, teat and drinking station weekly and to inspect the valves for wear monthly. This prevents calves from receiving too little or too much milk due to a defective part.

Points to consider when purchasing and using

When choosing a calf feeder, group size, number of drinking stations and the desired feeding schedule all play a role. A rule of thumb is a maximum of 25 to 30 calves per drinking station, to limit waiting times and restlessness at the station. Also pay attention to:

  • The ability to set individual feeding schedules per calf, for example for sick or weaker animals.
  • Availability of recorded data such as drinking speed and number of visits, which can detect illness early.
  • The availability and price of parts, as wear parts such as valves and membranes need to be replaced regularly.
  • The cleaning frequency and the ability to clean manually in the event of a breakdown.

How much milk should a calf drink per day?

A calf generally needs 6 to 8 litres of milk per day during the first weeks, divided over multiple feeding sessions. In the third to fourth week, this is often increased to 8 to 10 litres per day, depending on breed and growth target, and then gradually reduced towards weaning.

Can a calf drink water?

Yes, and it is even essential. From the first week of life, a calf must have access to clean drinking water in addition to milk. Water stimulates rumen development and the intake of concentrates or roughage.

How often should I give my calves milk?

With manual feeding, two to three times per day is common. A calf feeder can distribute the daily milk quantity over four to six smaller portions, which better matches natural drinking behaviour and benefits digestion.

Is it possible to feed calves unlimited milk?
